After two coats of stain on my oak cornice box, I noticed the color was uneven - some areas are light and some are dark. What did I do wrong? I used the disposable foam brushes. Thanks.

I've had this happen many times. You get in a hurry after preparing the project and you apply the stain.
You forgot the stain controller. This is a light preparation that is applied before your stain to control the color effect. It makes the final finish consistent, since wood is not consistent in its make up.
Sand it down and try again. You can get the stain controller at any fine lumber or hardware store.
Good luck!

The product that Eddie mentions is also known as wood conditioner.

Thanks. Do I need to strip the stain or can I just sand it down?

Most commercial strippers won't touch stain. Sanding is your best alternative although some have success with a two part bleach (available at most home centers).
