View Full Version : older Maytag dryer

I have a 1979 Maytag gas dryer model #DG-410. I bought it used 5 years ago in the states and moved it over with me to Taiwan 3 years ago. Right now it's not drying. The tumbler works, but no heat. Gas is okay, too. It was fixed shortly after we bought it for what seems to be the same thing. Is this cronic? Folks over here that fix dryers are few and far between. Those that have "expertise" insist on throwing things out and buying new instead of fixing them. Is it worth fixing? What's the procedure to checking what the problem is?

Hi: Adam

Some older Maytags have a pilot flame which heats a fluid safety element. If it's defective or not being heated correctly, the burner flame does not turn on.

You can determine if your dryer has this system. Open the burner compartment door and if you see a RED handled lever, the dryer has a fluid safety element. The lever will be located right in front and attached to the gas valve.

Should you not see the red lever, you may have a glow coil ignition system. If you see the coil, turn the dryer on while viewing the coil. It should lite but if not, it could be burned out. 5 years is about normal life time for the coil.

If the coil does lite but the burner fails to function, could be the solenoids. These parts are located on top of the gas valve.

Check the recent archives for more info. Also read the topic "glow coils and gas valves."

If parts are hard to locate, repair agents are far and few between , could be possible to contact Maytag by phone.

Whether it will be costs effective to fix, considering it's age and your location, you'll have to decide.
