I have knotty pine walls in my family room. They have been through a lot and need to be refinished. There are also some scratches and scrapes in the walls. Does anyone have any suggestions for refinishing them? Thanks in advance.

Morenita:

If teh walls are knotty pine planks originally installed in the 50's or 60's, they are probably finished in shellac.

You can test for the finish by rubbing an out of the way spot with a rag dampened with denatured alcohol. If the rag starts to drag/stick, the finish is shellac.

This can be restored/repaired by applying a fresh coat of shellac over the existing finish, after cleaning the wall(s) and letting the dry completely.

Thanks a bunch. I guess I'll be taking a trip to Home Depot this evening.
