Need help with staircase railing. I have a trilevel house with the staircase 7 steps up and 3 down at 180 . Current railing is going only halfway up the stairs and ends there. I am planning on replacing the railing but need to know how to connect two pieces so it looks like one.

Any home center that sells stair railings and parts should be able to explain this to you in person, but to make it short:

The two pieces are held together by a dowel screw; this is a rod with wood screw threads on both ends. The real trick is to drill the starter hole for the dowel screw in exactly the same place on both railing ends. The drilling must be precise in order for the railing to match up when screwed together.
