I need help repairing a fist sized hole in a hollow interior door. Can I fill the hole with material and putty over it? etc.. any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, you can cut out the damaged portion of the door skin, put a backer behind the hole and fill it with putty, spackle, joint compound, bondo, or any similar, paintable material. However, your finished patch will be smooth. That won't be a problem unless the door skin is made of luan, oak, or some other real wood, or has a woodgrain pressed into it. You won't be able to match the woodgrain, so it will look like a patch.
