I have a stand that's stripped and about ready to be stained. There is alot of green in the wood. Is there something to clean the wood with before I proceed any further. Will washing with mineral spirits help lighten this? Or is this ageing of the wood? Please advise as what I should do before I go any further. Thank You, Mema_one

Mema:

My guess is the wood you're working with is poplar, and the piece was originally stained very dark, or painted.

Poplar is noted for varying shdaes of green (as well as dark brown and even magenta) in its grain. A reddish stain, or a stain with a red cast will pull the green toward a brown, if that's what you're after.

Although a wood conditioner is not usually needed with poplar, it can't hurt, and may help.
