I am painting interior doors over unfinished pine wood.
I have latex primed and two coated with Ralph Lauren latex semi-gloss, lightly sanding in between and then vacuuming and using a tack rag to remove any residue.
The doors looked flat and were very rough on the grain. After going back to the paint store, it was suggested that we try a new can of paint, same type. I did so today and the doors are still rough. I painted a smaller room using Benjamin Moore oil base, semi-gloss, and it came out the way I wanted, with a smoother finish.
Can I now go over the latex painted doors with the oil base? I have been given different advice from several ainters and I am afraid to do anything.MOst say don't do it, but I like the look of the oilbase. These doors are brand new and too expensive to replace. Help!!

Yes, you can paint oil based over latex. To help smooth it and to add durability you can sand lightly with 220 grit, prime it with an oil based primer (kilz), lightly sand with a 220 when dry, remove dust and paint with the oil based paint. Or you can paint right on top of the latex, lightly sanding and removing dust between coats. As always, when re-painting doors with a diferent type paint or color, two finish coats is almost always nesasary.
Hope this helps.
