View Full Version : Pocket door needs shortening.

I have three pocket doors that need to be shortened. A stone floor is being installed in my kitchen requiring another one inch clearance on bottom of door. Can I remove the doors to cut them down. If removal is necessary how do I go about this with the least amount of invasion to existing trim, etc. Will appreciate any help or advice...

Pocket doors are tough (expensive) to alter. It would be easier and cheaper to replace them with swinging doors. If that's not an option, you are looking at removing ALL of the door trim to see exactly how the door was built, and to see if it's going to be possible to get the door slab out of the pocket to shorten it. That IS the least amount of invation to the trim, etc.

Lefty...thank you...swinging door not option. Will remove trim, etc. as you suggested. Felt this would be the option.Wish me luck. Mark of Glomark

Looking up at the top of the track that the pocket door rides on, can you tell which side of the top frame the rollers are on? If you can, you might be able to just remove the molding on that side at the top, and same side for the side molding.

Assume you know to lift the door up to get the rollers out of the track. If not, post back.

Thanks Rick: Good call...I did just that prior to your reply but feel better that you suggested same procedure. Actually removed top molding, took out the two bolts holding the track in over the opening and forced the rollers off the track. Had I got your message sooner I would have removed the left molding also. It seems more appropriate. Cleaned all the hardware (many years installed), cut the door and rehung it (with effort and muscle from my son), adjusted vertical, drilled two new holes to secure track with drywall screws, replaced molding and we are back in biz...This should more than accomodate the stone flooring...Thanks again. Mark,

Hopefully it is not too late, but you really should use deck screws instead of drywall screws. They have a much coarser thread and will support load bearing much better that fine thread drywall screws.
