We had crown moulding intalled throughout the house last May. In some areas of the house the corner joints have separated revealing a 1/4 inch gap. Also there seems to be slight separation between the moulding and the ceiling or the moulding and the wall. Any ideas on how to best fix these gaps? What caused it?

This can be normal due to settlement of you structure. all you need to do is caulk the top/bottom of the crown with a latex caulk the same color as your crown. In the corners you need to use dry spackling. You find these items at any paint/home-improvement store.

The cause sounds like the trim had a high moisture content, maybe stored in a damp location and installed in damp weather, then dried by normal ceiling heat. I always glue the joints of crown moulding with carpenters glue. This prevent a gap by sealing the edge and through normal adhesion.
