We had this problem before, as did the previous owners it turns out. It was so bad that the chimney almost fell on our house. We had the chimney rebuilt and all of the supporting rotten wood replaced two years ago. We chose to go with ventless logs and so did not replace the flue. Everything was great until today!! We of course have had 7 straight days of rain, but maybe it has been leaking this whole time, just not enough to get all the way in and start dripping. Can't see any water from the attic but it is difficult to see because of our vaulted ceilings. My question is this...my husband thinks it could be coming from the cap. I think it might be coming from the flashing area, although they re-did all of this when we had it re-built. New shingles, new flashing, good caulking job. How can we find out where this is coming from. Would it help to throw a hose up there for a few hours, after we have dired up from this rain. Is it normal for some water to get into the fireplace? Please any thoughts would be greatly apprecited. Susan

I am not clear on where you are seeing the leak. You say it is dripping down the front of the fireplace, but you also say "inside". Inside what?
Since you had rotted lumber before, either the roof or the flashing was leaking prior to that. If the flashing is leaking now, you should be able to see it from the attic.
Do you have a flue cap, on the top of the chimney to keep rain and birds and beasts out of the chimney??
Again, I am not very clear on where you see the water.
