I am purchasing berber carpets (olefin). I am receiving estimates, but I am receiving conflicting information regarding the carpet pad: 6 lb. vs. 8 lb. pads. Each has a different reason why one is better than the other. The carpet is going on a downstairs floor, flights of stairs, and throughout my upstairs. If anyone has any information that can help me decide, I would appreciate it.

Padding under loop pile berber is crucial to the carpets wear and performance. Put the densest pad 8lb, do not go over 3/8 thickness. Check with the carpet manufacture not the retail stores sales guy. Most sales people don't have a clue, when it comes to padding and carpet compatibility!!
Loop pile carpets will delaminate faster because of there construction. The secondary and primary backings will separate faster over a thick, or not dense enough pad.
