I had rusting debris falling from the flue of the gas water heater collect on top of the water heater and quite possibly a good deal falling into the water heater. The chimney sweeper dismantled the flue and tapped a good deal of rusting metal from the apparatus. I plan to replace the entire flue, however, I am wondering what damage this fallen debris may cause my water heater. The water heater is about ten years old. Thank you.

Hi:bgreenwood

About the best advice I could offer you is to have the tank inspected by a professional. This could be done by the local gas utility service person or a plumber.

Based soley on the tanks age, plan on replacing it. Consider the possibility some of the rust particules are coming from inside the firebox of the water heater also

You could inspect this yourself by removing the two covers and piering inside. Use caution and do not get the eyes, etc. too close. Use a flashlight if needed. See lots of rust? Tank may be rusted out.
