I have an existing door in a load bearing wall I want to move over about three feet or so. Will I be safe if I frame in new studs in the present opening and then cut into the wall and frame in the new door? Messing with a load bearing wall kind of scares me. This is an interior wall now but it was at one time an exterior wall.

Taking out the old door and putting the new studs in place is no problem. Everything there is supported by the header. But just to be on the safe side, support all of the ceiling joists that are resting on the top plates over the location for the new door before you start cutting any of the existing studs there. Do that about 2 feet in from the wall. This will give you room to work on framing in the new door opening.
