Before I add some insulation to our attic, I'm removing the insulation from non-insulation contact recessed lights. I know I need to make an insulation dam so the lights don't contact the insulation. What should the insulation dams be made from? Can I use wood, galanized flashing, chicken wire. How close to the insulation can the lights be?

Make the "dams" out of pretty much anything that will keep the insulation from contacting the cans. Sheetrock, plywood, 1X12's, ... Keep the dams 3 or 4 inches away from the cans on the sides and 6" on the tops.
