I have a gas hot water heater and the last two days the pilot light want stay lit. I relight it, and the burner comes on just fine but after several hours the pilot light goes out again. Lori

The most likely cause, for the problem you discribed, is a weak thermocouple. There could be other factors causing this problem. For now we will explain the most likely cause.
The thermocouple is the part that the pilot flame is heating the tip of. It should be glowing a dull or semi dull red color. The pilot flame should be all blue with no signs of any yellow.
If all this is the case, the thermocouple will need to be replaced. The part is available at any hardware store. Thermocouples are sold pre packaged with all the needed parts, full instructions, easy to replace and do not cost much $$$.
