View Full Version : Rotting bathroom window frame

The previous owners to my house didn't use a shower curtain to protect a window from the shower water (the tub/shower shares a wall with a window). This window has now rotted and appears to have rotted down into the tile work. The tile is loose and a bit discolored.

What kind of work, besides replacing the window, the window frame, sill, etc... needs to be done to completely fix this mess? I am not sure how much tile work will need to be done.

Also, is repainting and regrouting a tile a good alternative to completely replaceing the tile?

Hi Audrey;
Odds are pretty good you should plan on taking off all the tile and wall board. The wallboard has more than likley gotten wet all the way down to the tub. Just take it all off down to the studs . You may need to add new studs onto the old water damaged ones. Cut a 2x4 to length and screw it to any that are damaged.
I would not recommend painting the tile, it will not fix your problem. Even though I sell a regrout kit , it also will not help.
Good luck

Thank you, Ray! If I paid a professional to do this project for me, how much should it cost (ball park)? (Including removing old tile, wall board, adding new wall board and adding new tile.)

The cost will vary greatly depending on the type of window you want, the extent of damage to the studs. Ther are too many unknowns to give an accurate cost estimate. To just remove and replace the wallboard and tile , I would say somewhere between 1000 to 1300 should be close on this part of the project. If that price does does not make you cringe then call a couple of local contractors and get estimates and refrences. You may consider adding a new faucet while you have the wall opened up. This is a good time for that and should not add that much to the project.
Hope this helps
