I am installing cement board around my tub and don't know if the board is supposed to rest on TOP of the tub flange or go OVER it down to the tub surface.I know this has been asked before but the response wasn't clear. If the board goes over the flange it may cause tile problems as the board will bulge a bit all around the tub. On the other hand, if it rests on top of the flange there's going to be a gap behind the tile due to a slight overhang from the 1/2" cementboard (i.e between the flange and the tile).

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
thanks

Hi Philip,

Let the backer rest above the flange and caulk it with silicone. The fact that the tile goes beyond the backer is okay. Caulk the joint between the bottom of the tile and the tub.

Also, there is a tile board on this site. Shift over there if you have more questions.

Dear Philip,
The instructions for the tile flange we are installing say" Install waterproof sheetrock against top edge of flange. Fill void with filler and sweep smooth." The diagram shows plaster filler. We intend to use "Structolite"-the same stuff we are using to set the tub. We aren't positive about the kind of filler yet. Good luck. Let us know how it goes because we are facing the same project and would like to ideas so that we can all get it right.

Dear Philip,
Let me add something: I got this info by going to "www.Jacuzzi.com Then to "Customer service, manuals, General bath, Tile flange kit, installation instructions. Although we are retrofitting a flange kit(our tub is really for a drop-in) the diagram on the second page should help clarify things for you. I know it did for us. signed:Aileen D.

Ive seen felt strips (1"- 1 1/2" wide) nailed to the wall studs to bring the cement board out a fraction.
