i have done virtually everything you are not supposed to in stripping the interior side of my entry door. particularly, the belt sander. i think i actually sanded away some of the bottom because it looks kind of wavy and there is definitely part that is not as long as it should be. i also made the error of filling gaps with a filler that is much, much lighter than the wood. is there any way to "build up" the bottom of the door and fix any of the stuff i messed up? i haven't applied any stain or finish yet.

Starting with the filler; if you paint the door, the color of the filler won't matter. If you stain it, the filler will look like a filler, regardless of it's color, since it won't have any grain in it like the wood of the door. If this area is only at the bottom of the door, you might consider a 6" tall brass kick plate at the bottom of the door.
Now the "wavy" and too short problem -- if it is within about an inch of the threshold, install a door shoe to the bottom of the door. That is a "U" channel that will cover all of that up and has a vinyl strip across the bottom that will seal to the threshold when the door is closed. It may be that you will need to install a taller threshold too.

lefty,
you have no idea how much your response has helped me. i wasted hours looking for this information (and some reassurance) but did not know exactly where to look and was feeling very frustrated.
THANK YOU!
