I want to replace my single pane aluminum framed windows in my house. My home has wood paneling exterior. Should I remove the wood paneling to get to the windows, or should I cut around the window to get to it?
I don't want to use the existing aluminum frame to do a retrofit. How do I put things back so that there is no water leaks if I cut around the window? Is there another way?

How old is the wood siding, and CAN YOU STILL GET IT? Check that first. If you try removing the siding, chances are not all of it will come off in a reusable condition. And you would probably wind up with leaks in places other than just around the windows. I wouldn't suggest cutting around the windows either. Chances are you will wind up with leaks. Choices seem to be to either retrofit the windows, or to plan on residing when you replace the windows.

Thank you for your reply. I have noticed that most of the other homes in my area look like they have retrofit windows. I can still get the wood siding at Home Depot. That is the good news.
