My friend has a gas furnace in the garage. It is about 20-25 years old. Has not been on for a couple of years.
I started it today....problem is that after the pilot-light was lit...the main burner came on...which is fine...I set the thermostat just under 70 degrees. The burner is staying on and the blower is just coming on and then off...the whole time the burner is staying on.
Is not the burner supposed to "go off" when the blower is off??? So...I take it that it is a problem if the burner stays on! Right???
In a nutshell....why is the burner staying on all the time?
Help!

Hi:Rico
The burner should stay on until the room temperature is meet. The fan will delay turning on after the burners first lite up. Then when the furnaces internal heat exchanger <firebox> preheats, the fan will turn on.
After the house warms to the temp. set on the thermostat, the burners will turn off. The fan will remain on until the firebox cools down enough.
If the burners will not turn off when you manually turn the thermostat down after the burners fireup, then there is a connection problem with the thermostat.
You should find alot more information on the thermostat topic in the heating and cooling forum and the archives in that forum.
