New construction in the south. We are doing all the optimal insulation, soffit venting, ridge vents, gable vents. Since the main concern in the south is heat, does anyone know about attic radiant foil barrier that is stapled to the rafters? It blocks out 95% of radiant heat. What is the benefit of this, and how does it work if the heat has already come through the shingles? Thanks.

It reflects the heat back (towards the sky) which will lower the temp. in the attic, therefore reduce you cooling costs. Now, don't go putting a black (or dark) colored roof on the house!

What's the cost on this radiant foil barrier? Reason I ask. I have dark colored shingles on my roof. And yes, it gets hot in the attic in the summer, I do have a gable electric fan ventilation pulling air in through my soffits. That will help this summer. But if this radiant foil barrier is cheap enough and works I may try some. My sheathing on my pitched roof is a 5/8"-3/4" particle board with a truss roof system. Can this product be installed in my attic between the 2x4 truss joists ? Or is this stuff installed when new roofs and shingles are done??

Mikey,
Go to http://www.dulley.com, look under his general topics, attic cooling article #411. This will give you some information and then you can download for additional information. I know you can buy the foil at Lowe's. I haven't found the reflective paint yet. I'm having a hard time thinking either product could reflect anything that has already come through the roof, but this guy is pretty sharp and as you can see researches the heck out of everything. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find out. Sharon
