I'm in the process of having a new home built. My contractor used blown insulation to insulate the attic. The insulation is about 5 to 6 inches above the 2x6's in the attic floor. I'd like to add addtional insulation. Is it safe to use blanket insulatoin over top of the blown-in insulation? I'm worried that the blanket insulation may compress the blown-in down to the 2x6's. Would that degrade the blown-in's performance?

I guess I have a question of why you want to exceed code for your insulation. No, do not put laydown over the top of your new blown in insulation. If you want more, blow in some more.

The insulation is 5" to 6" above the 2X6 joists. That gives you about an R-38 attic insulation. Like Jack said, you can have more blown in over this, but why?? It won't affect your utility bill at all, at least not so as you will notice it. Might save you another $2 to $5 per month. If it costs another $1,000 to have 6 more inches blown in -- YOU do the math!
