We're building a crib for our first child (due July 4, 2001), and want to know if there are any non-toxic topcoats &/or finishes out there that we can purchase to use over stained hardwood. Home Depot doesn't carry anything like that, and we'd be glad to order something if we just knew who to deal with. Any suggestions &/ or referrals would be greatly appreciated!

Chris/Ann:

None of the finishes I know SAY they are non toxic, because that gets them in a whole 'nother ball game legally. However, I just finished a crib for my newest grandson-to-be and I used a product called Rock Hard Varnish. It's a standard product for use on bartops, and will take a ton of abuse without wearing.

ALL finishes can be harmful in their liquid state. Once cured, however, I have no qualms about using this product for the precious newby's crib.

Rock Hard Varnish is available from:

ps - you'll need the reducer, too.
