I have aquired some styrofoam sheets 4'x12' and 3" thick. I was thinking about laying them in the attic for additional insulation. Could I run into any problems down the road with this?

I can see several problems you are going to run into. First, the only way I see you getting this into the attic is in 1 or 2 foot square chunks. Once you get them up there, you will have a lot of obsticles to get them around. That will leave a lot of air gaps between the chunks. Those air gaps will reduce the "R" value of the EPS to about 1/10 of what it is in a full sheet. In it's full sheet form, EPS has an "R" value of about R-4 per inch. At that rate, 3" is about R-12. A tenth of R-12... why waste your time??

You could use them in your basement

Why do people think that styrofoam is good insulation ? The morning newspaper has more insulation value then styrofoam does.
