View Full Version : Refinishing beechwood gate

I want to refinish a beechwood baby safetygate to match the wood in our home (redwood). We had a handyman refinish it and he said it wouldn't take the stain. It looks terrible. (It didn't take the stain evenly). Will beechwood take a stain if thoroughly sanded down? If so should it be stripped with chemicals or by machine? Thanks for any help.

Christine,

There is a product that will help seal the surface of the beechwood so that it will take a stain more evenly. I'm not much help...I don't remember the name....but I've used it on pine before for this same purpose. You can find it in the hardware store with the stains.

As far as stripping....someone else will have to answer that. ??

The gate should be stripped by hand. You may have to bleach the wood (after stripping) in order to get rid of the uneveness - use a 2 part bleach.

The product needed for even absorption is called wood conditioner. There are various brands available - shop by price. To further help with the stain, use a gel type stain in the color of your choice. It goes on much more easily (and evenly).
