Gas and Oil Home Heating Furnaces - oil boiler retrofit / upgrade

I have a GM ( general motors ) Delco Brand oil fired boiler in my home, producing hot water for heat to radiators. the boiler is about 70 years old ( as near as we can figure ). We want to get information about how to increase the efficiencies of the boiler firing chamber. We are going to add a new burner, but want more efficiency in the firing chamber as well. any one have information or know where to get it?

The only way to upgrade or get more effeciency from a boiler that old is to replace it. A new gun will help it alittle, but not as much as you may want.

I beg to differ ... a good boiler can be upgraded to nearly modern standards at a fraction of the cost of new ...

add studs to the plenum to increase heated surface area for more exchange

add metal vanes to deflect the passing heated air onto the plenum surface and slow the passage of air

add thermal liner to firing chamber

reduce the flue size

add automatic damper to flue to close when combustion stops

add modern flame retention burner, with high speed and forced draft

PAY A CONTROLS CONTRACTOR to test and make all adustments.

overall effiency should increase by about 40 percent. cost should be about 20% of new unit installed by a contractor.

work can all be done by a jack of all trades handy man ... I have done 3 of these in homes I own and all work fine ...
