My Electric heat pump is a Heil brand, about 10yrs old. My thermostat for the heat pump has no 24volt control power. I assume the 24volt transformer has gone bad(I would at least like to test it to be sure). I looked inside the control panel of the heat pump unit and didn't see the 24v transformer. Where would it be physically located? Inside the main furnace unit????
Also my main furnace is operating ok and it does have control power at the thermostat.

Howdy, Your Heat Pump step down transformer will be found in the controls compartment of the indoor air handler unit. These are usually 75VA instead of the 40VA found in non-heat
pump units, this is because on a heat pump more loads are in the control circuit.DO NOT short 24v. leads to see if they are energized, transforer damage will result. Many H.P. thrmostats require a 24v. common at the t-stat also, in order to operate the electronics. If it has an iternal battery, try a fresh one 1st. On soe the battery is only a program saver if power fails, on others it is required 4 correct operation.Good luck.

You almost have me totally confused... Either you do or dont have 24V at the thermostat... the Transformer is located in the Air handler, thats the part inside.... but if your blower is running and can be controlled by the fan switch, you have 24 volts and its not your Transformer... I take it your outside unit isnt working..... have you tried to run the A/C? I know it may sound strange, but give it a try ( make sure the Thermostat is set lower then inside temp. ). do you have 240v at the contactor? how about 24v? check for 24 v at the thermostat wiring where it comes from house to the outside unit.. there are a few things that could be wrong, but check this stuff first

Maybe I am confused, myself, I understood him to say that there were two systems, one runnng fine ("my main furnace is running fine") & a HP system with no 24v. power at the t-stat. Sorry 'bout that.

Place hand on transformer,if it is cold the transformer is bad.Whether it is a step down or step up transformer it should be warm if primary voltage is present.Off hand i would say your outdoor unit locked out on a manual reset.WITH POWER OFF at the outdoor unit look for buttons to push.It probably will look like a red or green rubber button or tab.PDF Edited, make sure transformer does not have a fuse or reset.A fuse costs alot less than a transformer.PDF

OK dlpainte, let's hear from you. What type of heat pump system do you have. Furnace denotes, gas or oil. Do you have a heat pump 1st stage heat and a gas/oil furnace for 2nd stage/em heat? Pleas enlighten us.
