I'm installing 3 1/2" wood planks in my family and dinning rooms. The two rooms are connected in a "L" shape. The family room is 12'x21' with a 18" tile boarder on three sides(wood area will be 9'x 19 1/2') and dinning room is 10'x12'. My question is, which direction should I run my wood. My priority is to make the family room look bigger. I hope I've given enough info, thanks!

Run the floor planks so they are at right angles to the floor joists. No question, no debate. It is the only way to do it right.

Generally, if you install parallel to the longest dimension, 19'6 in this case, it will open up the room and give it the larger look.
