View Full Version : gas dryer safety

We are considering replacing an electric dryer with a propane-fired gas dryer. Is there any added safety risk or concern with this?

I am wondering about two things:
1.) lint collecting along the 8-ft. length of the vent pipe catching fire, and
2.) strong winds pushing exhaust back into the house through the side vent.

Our location, near the shore, is very windy and the vent goes from the dryer, at a 90 deg. angle, through an interior wall about 8 feet to the outside wall. This is about 18 feet up on the side of the house and subject to strong winds.

Should I be more concerned about our conditions with a gas dryer than with electric?

thanks for any input!

Hi:downtheshore

The direct answer to all of your posted questions is no.

The exhaust vent tube should be cleaned of any lint at least every two years regardless of the appliance being gas or electric.

The dryers inside cabinet should also be inspected and cleaned of lint at that time. More often as the appliance ages or as needed. That's just part of a good safety measure and routine maintenance with any dryer.

The outside vent has a built in flapper door to prevent reverse air flow both while the dryer is operational and when not.

A gas dryer has a fan just like the electric dryers. Which means the exhausted airs force will not be a concern for coming back into the dryer or house while the appliance is in operation.

Do not assume that your outside vent has a flap or a flap that is working!! Check this and for proper operation. I had to put a flap on mine, found at any HIS (Home Improvement Store). My dryer was getting condensation inside from cold air blowing down my exhaust pipe into the dryer.
