First of all, sorry to have taken so long to get back to you. Been having trouble with my ISP lately.
The techniques used in repairs of this type will vary depending on the amount of damage. Large or deep gouges will need wood filler. Small scratches may only need a few coats of finish applied and then sanded down until the finish is once again smooth.
