I've got a built-in gas fireplace with two wall switches. One goes nowhere (I assume its the blower that I'm too cheap to buy) the second lights it.

Often, but not all of the time, the wall switch will not work. Also, if it does light - it may go off 10 min later.

Any ideas?

There is a problem with the ignition controls. I would suggest you try the manufacturer.

Does your fireplace have a standing pilot light? It should be visible through the front glass. Do you ever have to re-light this pilot? Is there regular house power (110 volt) connected to the fireplace? Do you have a thermostat connected with the fireplace or is the switch the only electrical device that controls the unit? Posting back some more information will help.

Yes, it has 110 house current, with a wall switch.

The pilot lite is always on. I'm guessing the wall switch myself but haven't replaced it due to my wonderous contractor not labeling which bloody circuit breaker it is (I'm borrowing a tester).

I was hoping that someone would either vindicate my guess or blow it up.
