I am in the process of having a house built. Our contractor installed R13 insulation batts and we wanted R19. They wanted to put another R13 batt on top of the ones previously installed. Am I correct in assuming that this would compress the batt making the insulation less effective? Are we better off with R19 batts? We have 2x6 studs. Thanks

Look at the plans carefully and see what "R" value is specified there. If it says R-19, have the contractor take out the R-13 and install R-19. That was his mistake. Be glad you caught it now, and hopefully before the sheetrock is installed. (sounds like it.) Don't let him add a second R-13 to the existing. There isn't enough room in a 2X6 wall for two layers of R-13 to work properly. Insist that he do it right.

Thanks Lefty--that is what we insisted on. Unfortunately for the builder, he has to take the sheet rock down.
