View Full Version : ductwork installation

Short version: I have an abundance of heat in the basement during the winter that I want to spread around the house. I would like to install ductwork to supply every room so that we could eventually upgrade to central air. Do you need a return for every room or one big one for the whole house? How big of a duct do I need to run about 20 feet straight up to attic? Do you know of a good book?

Thanks

let's try the long version: where does the heat come from? Are you trying to install a complete system? Try your local library for info. as there is more than one book for what you seem to be proposing.

What is supplying the heat to your home now? Do you have a fireplace in the basement that is supplying the heat? Post back some more in-depth info.

The heat in the basement is supplied by a pellet stove. The rest of the house is heated by electric radiant in the ceiling. This is a townhouse built in 1980. My immediate goal is to get some of the heat upstairs. I would eventually like to go to central air. That is why I want to put in a complete, functional ducting system. I understand that you won't be able to map out the complete project. I just need to know basics like, would one return in the basement work or do I need a return from all rooms.

Appreciate the help.
