View Full Version : Bathtub water spout

I had new tile put up around my bathtub and the water spout does not fit back on. It's to long by about 1/2". I have been to three plumbing supply stores and I'm told to go to such and such place because they don't stock what I want. Is there only one size or can I get one that is 1/2" shorter?

Is the pipe sticking out of the wall copper or galvanized?
If it is galvanized, it will be threaded on both ends, and you can get 1/2" (interior diameter) galvanized nipples in different lengths to include one 1/2" shorter.
If this is the case, unscrew the old one counter-clockwise, take it with you, and get one 1/2" shorter. Wrap 2-3 turns of teflon tape CLOCKWISE ONLY around both threaded ends of the new nipple and tighten it into the wall fitting, and screw on the spout.
If it is copper, it is probably soldered to the fitting in the wall, and you'll have to cut off 1/2" and sweat on a new threaded fitting to shorten it.
If you need any more info, just come back and ask, and we'll be glad to help you.
Good Luck!

Received your email about pipe being galvanized and 1/2" too short.
Although you may think that you can't unscrew that galvanized nipple in the wall, you CAN if you use a larger pipe wrench and a little body-weight push-down of the wrench to start it (to the left). Get help, if you can't.
Take it out, take it with you, and get a new 1/2" galvanized nipple 1/2" longer.
IF you really can't remove it, a poor alternative might be to get a 1/2 galvanized coupling and a "close nipple", which is all threads.
Again, wrap teflon tape around all threads CLOCKWISE ONLY, including the close nipple (each end).
Screw the close nipple by hand into one end of the coupling and the coupling onto the pipe from the wall with a wrench, tightly. Then screw on the spout on the exposed close nipple.
Good Luck!
