Recently, my husband and I purchased my grandfather's centennial farm. The house was built in 1917 and has been updated periodically as grampa saw fit. Updating was not necessisarily done "the right way" but the least expensive way! To put it midly, we have much updating to do and are working on it as the money situation allows. My biggest desire right now is getting a shower in the bathroom. Is there an easy way to add a shower from the existing plumbing or will we have to rip it out and start fresh? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Changing out the valve in the tub to a tub/shower valve would be the quickest, easiest, and least expensive way to do this. The complete valve can be had for less than $150. Biggest expense will be adding the tub surround and shower doors (or curtain, if you so desire).

Check the tub valve. There may be a plug in the top of the valve. If there's a plug opposite where the tub spout comes out you could run the pipe for the shower head from there and install a new "diverter" spout without replacing the valve itself.

ahrjfk....
If you could describe the bathroom plumbing and tub installation in more detail please....?
If you could take a picture of it and post it, that would be very helpful...
I've got some ideas on a cute solution but it'll depend on the current design...
Grandpa made you buy the money pit, huh?? hehehe
Sounds like a fun rehab!
Good luck!!
