What is the best way to cut 1/4 inch from the edge of a 6x6 inch ceramic tile if I don't have access to a power tile saw. I have several dozen tiles to cut in this way. Thanks...

I had a similar problem, because I didn't plan my layout well, and used this method: I took an oak board, and cut a groove in the middle of it (on a table saw), the same width and depth as the small edge I wanted to remove from the tile. After good scoring of the tile, I placed the small edge in the groove of the oak board (the oak board in a vise), and snapped it off. It worked well on about 8 out of 10 tiles.

Rick's way sounds like a good one -- may have an invention there.
But you can also score the tiles on the cutter and break the waste off with the biters (nippers). Rub the edges with a rubbing stone or on the back of another tile.

John, I figured you would have a really good way to deal with this dilemma. But then, I doubt you design yourself into this situation much, and I have not since my first time. I tried the nippers, but for several dozen 6" tiles, it is cheaper to pay someone to cut them than the 6 weeks of physical therapy for tennis elbow!! LOL!

Well, actually, Rick, it is sometimes pretty good design. If you can't have full pieces, you strive for the largest cuts you can get. In this respect, a tile with only a quarter inch off is magnificent. We do, of course, have a tile saw on every job. I even bought one of those little cheap ones for ocassions when I don't want to lift the big one out of the truck. There was a time, though, way back in the day, when I didn't own a saw. It's amazing what you can do with nippers if you have nothing else.

If you are close to a Home Depot, they will cut it for you for a very small fee.

Hey Colorado,
You get back to tiling your shower. You don't have time to be goofing around on this forum.
