George,
I have an antique piano stool with a swivel or screw seat that screws up or down and metal claw feet with glass balls on the bottom.I have presently disassembled the stool and stripped the six plus layers of paint off using Jasco paint stripper.Right now there is no paint anywhere on the stool, but what I do have is some stains in the wood that just will not sand.I'm not sure what kind of wood it is but if I had to guess I'd say it was Birch,so these stains are very visible.I would like to remove these stains so I can have completely clear wood so I can apply a stain to it.Any suggestions?

Mark:

The original finnish on piano stools of this type was clear, usually lacquer. It appears that at some time duirng this stage water penetrated the finish and left marks in the wood. This type of stain is best removed with oxalic acid, available at better home centers and paint stores. Oxalic acid attacks the stain, although it will ighten the wood somewhat. The two-part bleaches lighten everything considerably.
