Recently remodeled and put in beautiful oak staircase. The stairway is open to second floor. We didn't carpet the steps because we loved the look of the wood. Noise seems to amplify to the second floor where bedrooms are. Any ideas for reducing the noise? I've thought about some kind of textile on the walls but don't know where to start.

Why don't you look for some old quilts or rugs. Many old items such as these can not be used on the floor or bed any longer but make beautiful wall displays. You can find them often at antique shops and resale shops. Even try Salvation army and Good Will.
