I tried to help someone with this question last week but found a better solution in my files, I can't seem to find that question any more so if anyone is interested here it is:
Base-coat your walls with off white. Let dry. Use an artist's knife to cut teeth into a 7 1/2" wide window squeegee. Dilute three different colors (your choice) of latex paint in seperate trays (one part water to two parts paint). Brush stripes of each color onto the wall to cover a 7 1/2" width; apply 1 color with a 4" brush, 1 with a 2 1/2" brush and 1 with a 1" brush. Drag colors by pulling the squeegee through the color bands before they dry. Clean smudges with a cotton swab. Continue until the wall is covered with vertical stripes. Repeat this process for horizontal stripes, creating the plaid pattern. I am sure the base color can be changed according to the other colors you have choosen. The white makes a nice clean base color to show the other colors up.
