I have a chest of drawers with light oak veneer that has a water stain on the top. The stain is rather deep and a dark gray in color. I have sanded the top layer of varnish off but the stain is still there. The chest is only about 10 years old. Any ideas of how to remove the stain so I can make it like new again? Thanks so much

Beaman:
Yours is the more serious of twotypes of water stains - one that has rached the wood. You need to apply oxalic acid. Ask for thsi bleach specifically, as it affects the stain more than the natural color of the wood. 2-part bleaches will lighten the entire top and may not remove the stain.
In order for the bleach to work well, you should strip the top with a paint/varnish remover.
Ask for oxalic acid by name at home centers and paint stores. Apply it to the entire surface for uniformity of color.
