I have a antique bed post that I am planning on refinishing. The bed post has mildew in the pours of the wood. The mildew has been sitting there for years, and now has discolored the wood. My queston is, how do you get rid of the mildew? I am also refinishing a matching desk....and it has been partially sanded. On the partially sanded part it has stains....such as marker stains....how so you get rid of that also? I want to get rid of all of these imperfections before I put all of the work into this project. Thank you!

Mildew/mold can be killed with clorox - 50:50 with water, then wipe dry. The stain of mold can be removed with oxalic acid - available from a paint store.
The permanent marker is something else - it tends to be permanent. You can try WD-40. Spray it on heavily, let it soak for awhile, then try scrubbing it out with a brass bristle brush or 000 steel wool. It MIGHT work.
