I am redoing a bathroom including a liberal use of ceramic tile - perhaps too liberal. The bathroom includes a bathtub/shower recessed in an alcove. Our plan is to tile all the walls and the ceiling in this area (3.0'x 5.5')
Floor tiles are 12" x 12" and wall tiles are 6" x 8"

I'm looking for advise on how to tile the ceiling. The cement backerboard is in place and now its time to tile.

Questions include:
1. Is it best to use thinset or adhesive?
2. How about tile size?
3. Do I need to provide support to the tile
for the bonding material to set?
4. Any other suggestions/tricks/hints?

Hi,

My method for tiling ceilings is to shove a piece up there and get out of the way :-)

Seriously, if the pieces aren't too heavy, you can mix thin set fairly stiff and mount them with that. In most cases they'll stay up by themselves. If the tiles are dense and heavy, they may need some support.

Since I'm not going to be there to heft the tiles and judge their density, you'll have to test things as you go. Cover the tub with blankets and go for it. Since the process is slow, it makes sense to butter the thin set onto each piece intead of smearing it on the ceiling. This will prevent overglazing (surface drying of the thinset). You start at the outside edge of the ceiling and work your way toward the back and ends, making your cuts there. Layout is important, of course.
