I purchased a mahogany finish antique bedroom set that needs some repair to the veneer. I am wondering if there is any way for me to figure out what kind of wood it is underneath the veneer?? What should I do to repair the veneer, it is just a few small spots.

The secondary woood under the veneer is unimportant. Since you didn't go into detail as to what kind of damage has occured, here's a suggestion.
Go to the site listed below and order their catalog - it's free. In the catalog you'll find both instructional booklets and all the materials you need to make repairs.
