View Full Version : Cathedral Ceiling R and How?

I am building an adition (18' by 20' with 6 inch walls) with a cathedral ceiling. I believe R38 is recommended for Louisville, KY area.
Builder is planning to use 2 by 8 joists. How can I most economically put in R38 insulation?
Should I insist on 2 by 10's? If so I have the same question as above.
thanks for any help.

Jack the Contractor posted this in a different forum. Might be a solution to your problem as well.

"I think I have found the solution to your problem. I was at Menards yesterday and near the contractors desk is a new product. It is insulation wrapped in a aluminum wrap. It is about 1/4" thick, and comes in rolls, 16" wide. It is R-14, but claim you can put on 2 layers for a much higher R rating. This way, you could leave you 2x4's in place and save your headroom. Head to your local Menards. You have them there."

If you have Menards in your area, check it out. If you don't have them, try one of the other lumber yards or larger home improvement centers. I haven't seen the product yet. Will spend a little time on Monday researching it.

The insulation for Lousiville in ceilings is R30. It should fit great with 2x8's. Ask your contractor. I usually just staple it on with the backing. Need a tall ladder.
