Hi tgildon,
I do feel sad because removal of properly installed tile on cement backer is virtually impossible to remove without destroying the board. You could remove it all and start from scratch ( this is what I would recommend) or if the job is solid you may be able to go tile over tile (on vertical surfaces this can be a little tricky to do!)
Good Luck
P.S. The cost of new backer board is a small price to pay for the advantage to check for water damage and to install the new tile properly to insure there will be none in the future. come back when you are ready to install the new board and we will explain how!

I'm wondering if the old tile might be installed on something other than backer board? Mud, maybe?
