I have a brick fireplace that someone painted. I stripped the paint but the brick is ugly now I would like to put ceramic tile over the brick on the face of the fireplace.
Can this be done and can you treat the brick like wall?
Thanks for any and all input
Elaina

Hi Elaina,

Yes, you can treat the brick like wall as long as you've gotten enough paint off to make it look like brick again. I don't know what type of tiles you have in mind, but generally, you should use a multi-purpose thin set as your adhesive. If you want to get more specific, come back and Rich Gately will tell you how to do it right.

I have completely stripped the bricks they look like bricks again. I have 8 inch ceramic tile that I want over the brick, but I want the new face a little larger than the brick . Do I pit the backer board over the brick and then twice as much over the wall part to make it level?

It sounds like a plan. You can put anything behind the layer of backer board. It could be sheetrock, which is much cheaper. I don't know, though, how you intend to attach the backer to the brick work. Are you going to bond it to the bricks? I've never tried anything like that. Being a mud man, I would use metal lath and cement mortar.

Where is that Rich Gately when you need him? :-)
