My home is 2 1/2 years old and is a two story colonial. I would like to tile my master bathroom. Presently there is carpet on the floor. When I called to have my tiles touched up after moving in, I asked if they would give me an estimate to do my bathroom. They informed me that they would have to put down a sub-flooring first because of the water. Would the contractor have built my home and not put this sub-flooring down under the carpet? How can I tell if there is sub-flooring and is this really necessary. Thank you Jo Anne

By "sub-floor", they were probably referring to a cement-board base, like Wonderboard or Hardi-Backer. And yes that is required under your tiles. See other posts for more info.

Good Luck,

Rick

Hi Joanne
Dont panic. It sounds like the contractor that built you home used what he should ,since he was putting carpet in the bathroom. The tile contractor also gave you good info on needing to put down some type of cement backer board, that is what he was refering to as subfloor.
Your job sounds like a typical job. If the tile man is any good you should not be in for any suprises. Get refrences from whoever you use and call them, if the contractor is anygood he should not hesitate to give you a couple.
Hope your project goes well.

Hey Jo Anne,

Since you mentioned your house is two-story, a suppose you're talking about the upstairs. It's important to know what type of subflooring was used. It might be plywood or it might be boards (2/6 t&g). Could you lift up a corner of the carpet and check it out?

Hi Ray, How's it goin'?
