I have a piece of Pine furniture that has a somewhat sticky wax like finish. I’d like to darken the stain and need to strip the finish. Does standard furniture stripper work to strip this finish or is another technique needed?

Solvent strippers I'm familiar with won't clean off a wax finish, which is good news. You won't have to pay as high a price for what you need and the job will go faster.
Naphtha is the solvent for a wax finish - I use it in my shop regularly to clean pieces. It removes dirt, oil, grease and wax - usually with little effort.
Naphtha, some times referred to as VM&P Naphtha is available at many home centers and paint stores. FYI - the VM&P stands for 'Varnish Makers & Painters'
