I have a wooden dressser with a veneer which has separated from the base wood. It is very dry and I want to "soften" the veneer in order to glue it back to the base wood without splitting the veneer. How do I go about doing that?

Assuming the veneer has little (or preferably) no finish, spritz the top side (not the glue side) with water from a sprayer - just light coats until the veneer is flexible enough to move into position.

There's a good possibility you'll be able to iron it back on - literally. Use an iron on medium setting. Cover the loose veneer (after positioning it correctly) with several layers of clost - or a single dish towel, and apply the iron just as if you were trying to iron the cloth. Go slowly. The heat may well remelt the original adhesive and put the veneer back where it was.
