I have an old wood bed frame that I am in the process of sanding so that I can later antique it. I am planning on painting a white over the antique stain but I am not quite sure what the best way of doing this is. Also, since I am planning on antiquing the frame how well do I need to sand it; it has a dark stain on it now? Any help would be much appreciated by myself and my daughter, it is her bed. Thank you for your help and time.

Last question first. No matter what the finish poor sanding shows. The surface of the bare wood should be smooth unless you want dings/dents and roughness to show through the finish.
Depending on what you're 'antiquing' with, you'll want to read the lable carefully. It may tell you you can't put anything over it, or it may suggest a 'window' of time during which the finish may be recoated. Check it out.
